ODNI probes CIA obstruction over COVID origins and overseas biolabs

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) confirmed that its Intelligence Community Inspector General is investigating allegations made by CIA whistleblower James Erdman. Erdman, a former member of the Director’s Initiatives Group (DIG) – a task force created in 2025 to examine the origins of COVID‑19 – testified that the CIA obstructed the DIG’s work, retaliated against members who supported a lab‑leak hypothesis, and engaged in illegal investigations of DIG personnel. His written testimony was presented to a Senate committee and prompted letters to CIA Director John Ratcliffe urging protection against retaliation.

Separately, ODNI announced a probe into secret U.S. overseas biolabs, a move described by experts as potentially limited to an internal compliance review rather than a broad exposé. The investigations are framed as efforts to curtail perceived “deep‑state” bureaucracy and restore oversight of intelligence and bio‑security operations.
