Off-grid solar initiatives target electricity access in sub-Saharan Africa

Off-grid solar technology is being positioned as a primary solution for the hundreds of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa currently living without electricity. A report by the World Bank Group’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) and GOGLA indicates that reaching the estimated 398 million people without access by 2030 will require consistent public and private investment alongside supportive government policies.

Recent data shows the number of people using off-grid solar products, such as home systems, water pumps, and lanterns, increased by 26% over the last two years, rising from 118 million to 149 million. The sector has demonstrated durability, with 95% of surveyed users reporting their systems remained functional for four or more years.

To address logistical barriers like unmapped homes and difficult terrain, Google and Ignite Energy Access have collaborated to develop tools for better delivery and tracking. This partnership aims to support efforts like Mission 300, a joint initiative by the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank to connect 300 million people in the region to electricity by 2030.
