Offenburg Police report surge in fatal traffic accidents

The Offenburg Police Headquarters has reported a significant increase in fatal traffic accidents in the Mittelbaden region. In the first eight months of 2026, police recorded 30 fatal accidents resulting in 33 deaths. This figure exceeds the total annual fatalities recorded in any year since 2022, which saw 28 deaths in 2022, 25 in 2023, 21 in 2024, and 28 in 2025.

Among the victims, 12 were motorcyclists, 12 were car occupants, five were cyclists or e-bike users, and four were pedestrians. Investigations into the causes of these accidents identified improper speed in eight cases, speeding in six cases, driving errors in eleven cases, and distraction in five cases. Alcohol consumption was also cited as a factor in several fatal incidents.

In response to these trends, police are intensifying existing safety measures and increasing controls at known accident hotspots, including the A 5 and B 500 roads. Martin Plate, head of the protective police directorate, expressed concern over the lack of caution displayed by some drivers, noting that reckless behavior is resulting in preventable loss of life.
