Ogoni stakeholders clash over oil resumption transparency and jobs
Stakeholders in Ogoniland are experiencing friction regarding the planned resumption of oil exploration in the region. The Ogoni socio-cultural organization, KAGOTE, has criticized the Ogoni Dialogue Committee (ODC) for a lack of transparency and accountability in the dialogue process.
KAGOTE President Chief Lesi Maol stated that the group does not oppose the Federal Government or the resumption of oil production, provided the process includes environmental safeguards, community participation, and sustainable benefits. KAGOTE has called for greater clarity regarding the composition of the ODC’s harmonization committee and the sharing of information among members.
Simultaneously, the Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF) Worldwide is planning a national congress to address these disagreements. The youth group is demanding 500 direct employment opportunities from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), contesting reports that only 40 slots have been allocated to Ogoni youths.
