Ogoniland leadership and oil resumption disputes

Political and social tensions in Ogoniland have intensified, initially centered on leadership disputes and allegations of smear campaigns. Reports indicated that Chief Lesi Maol, President of KAGOTE, faced attacks from critics such as Chief Gani Topba. These disputes involved allegations of the misuse of development funds and the improper use of proxies to secure monthly payments of ₦50 million from pipeline surveillance contracts.

As the situation progressed, the focus shifted toward the planned resumption of oil exploration. KAGOTE expressed concerns regarding a lack of transparency and accountability within the Ogoni Dialogue Committee (ODC). While KAGOTE stated it does not oppose oil production if environmental safeguards and community benefits are secured, the Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF) Worldwide has escalated demands for employment. The OYF is contesting reports that only 40 job slots were allocated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), instead demanding 500 direct opportunities for Ogoni youths.
