Ogoniland leadership tensions rise amid allegations of smear campaigns

Political tensions have escalated in Ogoniland following a series of attacks directed at Chief Lesi Maol, the President of KAGOTE and CEO of Giolee Global Resources Ltd. Critics and reports suggest that Chief Gani Topba has been engaging in smear campaigns to undermine Maol’s reputation and his efforts toward Ogoni youth development.

Allegations have surfaced regarding the misuse of government opportunities and funds intended for Ogoni development. One report claims a prominent leader has been using proxies to secure monthly payments of ₦50 million from pipeline surveillance contracts on the Trans Niger Delta Pipeline (TNP) while allegedly prioritizing personal interests and relatives over community needs.

In response to regional challenges including insecurity, farmer-herder clashes, and youth disunity, Ogoni stakeholders recently held an extraordinary meeting in Bori. The meeting aimed to harmonize youth organizations under a unified voice, though the initiative has faced criticism and personalized attacks rather than constructive engagement.
