Ogun State building collapse kills three, spurs full investigation
A two‑storey mixed‑use building on Baale Road in the Ajuwon community of Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State, collapsed on Monday afternoon after a severe thunderstorm. The collapse killed three people and left at least twelve others rescued from the rubble.
Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun ordered a comprehensive technical investigation and warned that anyone found violating building regulations would be prosecuted. A multi‑agency response—including the Ogun State Safety Office, State Fire Service, ministries of Environment, Physical Planning and Urban Development, the Nigeria Police Force, the National Emergency Management Agency and contractors—conducted search‑and‑rescue operations and recovered the bodies.
Preliminary findings indicated a catastrophic structural failure, but the exact cause was not determined on site. Specialists from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, the Ogun State Building Control Agency and other relevant bodies will carry out detailed structural, geotechnical and forensic engineering assessments to establish whether foundation failure, soil instability, construction defects or substandard materials were responsible.
