Ogun State students hospitalised after recurring gas emissions

More than 100 students and staff from several secondary schools in Ogun State, including Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye, and Ijebu-Igbo, were hospitalised on Wednesday following exposure to a gaseous substance. Affected institutions include Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School, and Itamerin Comprehensive High School.

Victims reported symptoms such as breathing difficulties, fainting, stomach disorders, and drowsiness. The incident prompted several schools in Ago-Iwoye to close early as parents arrived to collect their children.

This event marks the fourth major occurrence of mysterious gas emissions in the Ijebu area since April 2026. Previous incidents in April, May, and June resulted in hundreds of hospitalisations. The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) has linked these emissions to underground gas, specifically identifying the substance as methane. Investigations suggest the emissions may be a natural phenomenon associated with geological and tectonic fault lines, leading officials to rule out sabotage or pipeline leaks.
