Ogun State gas leak incidents

Overview

Since April 2026, the Ijebu area of Ogun State has experienced recurring mysterious gas emissions. In October 2026, more than 100 students and staff from several secondary schools in Ijebu-Ode, Ago-Iwoye, and Ijebu-Igbo were hospitalized after being exposed to a gaseous substance. Victims reported symptoms including breathing difficulties, fainting, stomach disorders, and drowsiness.

The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) has identified the substance as methane. Investigations suggest the emissions may be a natural phenomenon linked to geological and tectonic fault lines, rather than pipeline leaks or sabotage.

In response to the repeated incidents, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Daisi Elemide, has summoned the State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, to appear before the House on October 28, 2026, to seek clarification on preventative measures and agency coordination.
