Ogun State House of Assembly summons commissioner over gas leaks

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Daisi Elemide, has summoned the State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, to appear before the House on October 28, 2026. The summons follows repeated gas leaks in the Ijebu axis of the state, which have caused significant public concern.

Recent incidents involving a suspected gaseous substance led to the hospitalization of over 100 students from various secondary schools in Ijebu Ode, Ago Iwoye, and Ijebu Igbo. Affected institutions include Ijebu Igbo Girls Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, and Itamerin Comprehensive High School. While the government previously identified a similar substance as methane, lawmakers are seeking clarification on preventative measures and agency coordination to stop future occurrences.
