Platense and Coquimbo Unido draw 1-1 in Copa Libertadores opener

Platense and Coquimbo Unido played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16 at the Ciudad de Vicente López stadium in Argentina. Luciano Giménez opened the scoring for Platense in the 35th minute with a header following a cross from Juan Saborido.

Platense had a chance to extend their lead in the 82nd minute when a penalty was awarded to Guido Mainero, but Coquimbo goalkeeper Diego Sánchez saved both the initial shot and the rebound. In the final moments of stoppage time, Guido Vadalá scored for Coquimbo Unido to secure the equalizer.

The draw leaves the series open for the second leg, which will take place on Wednesday, August 19, at the Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso stadium in Chile. The winner of this matchup will advance to face either Fluminense or Independiente Rivadavia in the quarterfinals.
