Ohio launches digital driver's licenses in Google Wallet
Ohio residents can now add digital driver’s licenses or state IDs to Google Wallet on Android devices. This rollout marks the first expansion of Google’s digital ID program in 10 months, making Ohio the 12th region to support the feature.
The digital ID is compatible with TSA checkpoints, Ohio state government buildings, casinos, and participating local businesses. Verification is handled via encrypted NFC, Bluetooth, or QR code scanning. Users can approve specific information sharing using biometric authentication, such as Face Unlock, a fingerprint, or a PIN.
To ensure privacy, the mobile ID remains on the device and does not sync to the cloud. If a device is lost or stolen, the credential can be remotely wiped through a Google account. While the digital version offers convenience for many everyday situations, state officials still recommend carrying a physical ID card for traffic stops.
