Ali Ahmeti defends Ohrid Agreement and criticizes North Macedonian political shifts
Ali Ahmeti, leader of the Democratic Union for Integration (BDI), has issued several critiques regarding the political landscape in North Macedonia and the implementation of the Ohrid Agreement. Ahmeti characterized the Ohrid Agreement as a necessary compromise that secured rights for Albanians, including the official use of their language and national symbols. He warned against political parties entering government without legitimacy, specifically criticizing the VLEN coalition.
In a separate political critique, Menduh Thaçi accused Ahmeti of being an “instrument of the Slavs” and claimed that his leadership has not benefited the Albanian community.
Reflecting on the 25-year legacy of the Ohrid Agreement, observers note its role in transitioning the country from a period of intense conflict and discrimination to one where Albanian-language education and institutional representation have significantly increased, though challenges regarding political implementation remain.
