OIC elects Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as new Secretary-General

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held its 23rd extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The meeting focused on the Palestinian cause, developments in Jerusalem, and the election of a new Secretary-General.

Mauritanian diplomat Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed was elected by unanimous vote to succeed Hussein Ibrahim Taha as the new Secretary-General. Ahmed, who has extensive experience in UN missions and former roles in the Mauritanian government, will lead the 57-member organization.

During the session, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan condemned the Israeli E1 settlement project in the West Bank, describing it as a direct threat to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. He also condemned raids on Al-Aqsa Mosque. Additionally, the OIC passed a resolution praising the Al-Quds Committee, chaired by King Mohammed VI of Morocco, for its efforts in supporting the resilience of residents in Jerusalem.
