Oil India discovers natural gas in Krishna-Godavari Basin
Oil India Limited (OIL) has announced a significant natural gas discovery in the shallow-water Krishna-Godavari (KG) Basin off India’s east coast. The discovery was made in the previously unappraised Matsyapuri formation within the KG-DSF/GSKW/2018 offshore block.
Testing at the Godavari-1 appraisal well, located at a depth of 2,024 to 2,027 meters, began on October 16, 2026. The well has recorded a flow rate of approximately 100,000 standard cubic meters per day (SCUMD), with a peak flow of 200,000 SCUMD during continuous testing. The discovery also includes condensate output of approximately 170 barrels of oil per day.
OIL is currently preparing to test the next higher zone to further assess the potential resource. This development aligns with India’s national energy strategy to increase the share of natural gas in the country’s energy mix from approximately 6 percent to 15 percent by 2030.
