Oil India natural gas discovery in Krishna-Godavari Basin
Overview
Oil India Limited (OIL) announced a significant natural gas discovery in the shallow-water Krishna-Godavari (KG) Basin off India’s east coast. The discovery occurred within the Matsyapuri formation at the Godavari-1 appraisal well, with hydrocarbons identified at depths between 2,024 and 2,027 meters.
Testing at the well recorded a flow rate of approximately 100,000 standard cubic meters per day (SCMD), reaching a peak of 200,000 SCMD. The find also includes a condensate output of approximately 170 barrels per day. OIL is preparing to test a subsequent, shallower zone to further assess the resource potential.
This development supports India’s national energy strategy to increase the natural gas share in its energy mix from 6 percent to 15 percent by 2030, while aiming to bolster domestic production and reduce vulnerability to global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical instability in energy corridors like the Strait of Hormuz.
