Oil India discovers natural gas in Krishna-Godavari Basin

Oil India Limited (OIL) has announced a natural gas discovery in the shallow waters of the Krishna-Godavari Basin off India’s east coast. The find was made at the Godavari-1 appraisal well within the previously unexplored Matsyapuri formation.

Production testing recorded a peak gas flow rate of 200,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMD), alongside the production of approximately 170 barrels of condensates per day. Hydrocarbons were identified at depths between 2,024 and 2,027 metres. The company is currently preparing to test a subsequent zone located at a shallower depth.

This discovery aligns with India’s strategic efforts to bolster domestic energy production and reduce vulnerability to global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical instability in major energy corridors, such as the Strait of Hormuz.
