Oil price increases pressure US stock markets
Rising oil prices have pressured US stock markets, pulling major indices away from recent record highs. Brent crude oil rose 4.1% to $104.35 per barrel, driven by uncertainty regarding the energy industry's stability amid conflict with Iran.
The S&P 500 fell 0.3%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 143 points (0.3%), and the Nasdaq composite declined 0.4%. Higher energy costs are contributing to inflationary pressures, which has pushed the 10-year Treasury yield toward 5.29%, a level near its highest since 2002.
While a report showing fewer unemployment applications suggests economic resilience, the combination of high oil prices and rising Treasury yields—which increase borrowing costs—has placed downward pressure on investments, including technology stocks like Nvidia, which fell 1.3%.
