Oil prices fall ahead of anticipated U.S. sanctions on Iran
Global oil prices declined on Monday as investors reacted to the prospect of intensified U.S. economic pressure on Iran. Brent crude fell by approximately 1.29 percent to around $93.17 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped by over 1 percent to approximately $85.86 per barrel.
The market volatility follows two consecutive weeks of gains exceeding 5 percent. The downturn comes as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent prepares to detail a new package of sanctions, which he described as being among the most severe in history. President Donald Trump has also threatened to impose penalties on countries that continue to trade with Iran.
While the Iranian government has condemned the planned measures, President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for a diplomatic solution to the escalating tensions. Analysts note that the effectiveness of the U.S. strategy may depend on its ability to isolate Iran economically and influence major trading partners like China.
