Oil prices rise amid Middle East tensions and blockade threats

Global energy markets are experiencing heightened volatility due to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Oil prices have risen, with Brent crude trading above $90 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also seeing gains, as investors react to the threat of maritime blockades and diplomatic deadlocks.

Key drivers of market instability include the United States' threat of an indefinite maritime blockade against Iran and the potential expiration of a 60-day truce between Washington and Tehran. Tensions are further exacerbated by the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, which has included drone attacks on an Aramco refinery in Jazan and missile strikes against Saudi vessels in the Red Sea.

Market visibility is currently hampered by maritime data challenges, as an increasing number of vessels are reportedly disabling their AIS transponders while traversing the Strait of Hormuz. This lack of transparency, combined with OPEC's recent downward revisions to global oil demand growth forecasts, continues to fuel a high risk premium in energy pricing.
