Tanker attacks expand in Persian Gulf near Qatar and UAE

Commercial shipping in the Persian Gulf is facing an escalation of violence as attacks expand beyond the Strait of Hormuz. On Wednesday, the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged chemical tanker Acers was struck by multiple projectiles approximately 51 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the attack resulted in an unspecified number of casualties.

In a separate incident, the Panama-flagged crude supertanker GEM NO. 2 was struck by an unknown projectile approximately 13 nautical miles west of Al Jazeera in the United Arab Emirates. The strike caused a fire that was subsequently extinguished, though the status of the crew and the extent of environmental damage remain unknown.

These incidents occur amid a surge in maritime attacks. Maritime security data indicates that at least 12 tankers were targeted between September 28 and October 5. While most recent violence has been concentrated near the Strait of Hormuz, these latest strikes in the wider Gulf suggest a widening of the risk zone for commercial vessels.
