OJK DIY warns online gambling drives increase in online loans
The Financial Services Authority (OJK) in Yogyakarta (DIY) has identified a direct link between online gambling and the increased use of online loans (pinjol). According to OJK DIY Head Eko Yunianto, individuals who lose money in online gambling often turn to fintech peer-to-peer (P2P) lending to secure quick funds.
Data from OJK DIY shows that outstanding P2P lending in the region reached Rp1.41 trillion in the second quarter of 2026, up from Rp1.20 trillion in the same period in 2025. This financial trend coincides with significant social consequences; the Yogyakarta Social Services (Dinsos) reported that as of July 16, 2026, 31,649 recipients of the Family Hope Program (PKH) or social assistance had their benefits revoked due to suspected involvement in online gambling. This represents 17.74% of the total 178,402 PKH recipients in the region.
