OJK intensifies Indonesian financial oversight and literacy efforts

The Indonesian Financial Services Authority (OJK) is intensifying its oversight of the national financial sector through various regulatory and educational initiatives. To strengthen financial stability, OJK has revoked the business licenses of 11 to 12 regional banks (BPR and BPRS) between January and August 2026 due to capital and liquidity issues. The Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS) is managing the liquidation process for these entities.

Addressing consumer protection, OJK reported 22,206 complaints regarding illegal financial practices from January to June 2026, with illegal online lending (pinjol) being the most frequent. Simultaneously, the authority is promoting financial literacy and a culture of saving, particularly among the youth, to reach a national financial inclusion target of 98 percent by 2045.

In the digital landscape, OJK noted significant growth in digital asset accounts, reaching 22.93 million by July 2026, with crypto transactions totaling Rp20.52 trillion. The authority also highlighted positive growth in the health insurance sector as of June 2026. To combat digital fraud, which has seen over 636,000 reports since late 2024, OJK and partners like OVO are emphasizing digital literacy and security measures.
