Indonesia plans mass bank account opening for 200 million citizens

The Indonesian government is planning a mass bank account opening program targeting approximately 200 million citizens, specifically those aged 17 and older. Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan stated the initiative aims to facilitate the distribution of government assistance, with accounts potentially opened at BRI and seeded with an initial balance of Rp50,000.

While the program is intended to boost financial inclusion and ensure social assistance is delivered via direct-to-account transfers, it has drawn scrutiny. Some observers suggest the Rp11 trillion budget could serve as a political investment, while economists warn that without significant improvements in financial literacy, mass account ownership may not lead to productive economic activity or may expose youth to financial risks.

The Financial Services Authority (OJK) supports the program's goal of building early saving habits but emphasizes the need for strict adherence to prudential banking and 'know your customer' (KYC) protocols. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa expressed skepticism regarding the program's implementation within the current year.
