Okanagan Indian Band rescinds evacuation orders after Bradley Creek wildfire
The Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) has rescinded evacuation orders for Newport Beach, Logan’s Landing, and a property northwest of 11819 Westside Rd, allowing residents to return following the Bradley Creek wildfire. The wildfire, which ignited on August 1, burned approximately 2,658 hectares and destroyed an estimated 230 homes on OKIB land.
Despite the return orders, the OKIB has issued warnings regarding post-wildfire geohazards. A preliminary assessment by Stantec indicates an increased risk of flooding, erosion, debris flows, rockfall, and slope instability in burned areas, particularly during heavy rainfall or spring snowmelt. Specific concerns were noted for Bradley Creek and the Westside Road crossing.
Returning residents are advised to exercise caution, checking for structural damage, fallen power lines, and hazardous debris. The OKIB recommends using N95 masks to mitigate exposure to ash and soot, replacing furnace filters, and verifying the safety of refrigerated food following power outages.
