Okanagan Indian Band rescinds evacuations after Bradley fire
Overview
The Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) has begun rescinding evacuation orders for residents affected by the Bradley Creek wildfire, including those at Newport Beach, Logan’s Landing, and several properties on GoodWater Drive. The wildfire, which ignited on August 1, burned approximately 2,658 hectares and destroyed an estimated 230 homes on OKIB land.
As residents return, the OKIB has issued significant geohazard warnings. A preliminary assessment by Stantec indicates an increased risk of flooding, erosion, debris flows, rockfall, and slope instability in burned areas, particularly near Bradley Creek and the Westside Road crossing. These risks are expected to intensify during heavy rainfall or spring snowmelt.
Returning residents are advised to exercise extreme caution regarding structural damage, fallen power lines, damaged trees, and sharp debris. To mitigate health risks from ash and soot, the OKIB recommends wearing N95 masks, using HEPA-equipped vacuums, replacing furnace or air conditioner filters, and wearing protective clothing. Additionally, residents should verify the safety of refrigerated or frozen food following power outages.
