Okanagan Valley expects weekend rain after record dry spell
The Okanagan Valley is expected to receive its first measurable precipitation in three months this weekend, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). Meteorologist Brian Proctor noted that while rain is forecast for Saturday, August 29, it may not be sufficient to suppress active wildfires in the region.
The area has endured a severe dry spell; Kelowna recorded zero millimetres of rain from August 1 to 22, and Penticton saw less than two millimetres since Canada Day. July was exceptionally dry for the region, with Penticton, Kelowna, and Vernon receiving only 5% of their typical rainfall.
While the rain may help clear some smoke, air quality warnings have remained persistent due to fires in Clinton, Boston Bar, Summerland, and the Cascade Mountains in Washington. Temperatures are expected to drop to around 20 C this weekend, a significant decrease from the recent 30s C heat. Additional rain is possible on September 2 and 3.
