Okanagan drought, wildfires, and recovery efforts

Overview

The Okanagan region is facing environmental challenges driven by climate change, characterized by increased drought conditions and intense wildfires. Following a period of extreme dryness—where some areas received only 5% of typical rainfall and Kelowna recorded no rain for much of August—meteorologists forecast the first measurable precipitation in three months. While rain may improve air quality by clearing smoke from regional wildfires, experts suggest it may not be sufficient to suppress active fires in areas such as Clinton, Summerland, and the Cascade Mountains.

In the aftermath of devastating August wildfires, recovery efforts have begun. The Bradley Creek and Bald Range fires resulted in the evacuation of approximately 20,000 people and the destruction of over 300 structures. To support the community, the ‘OK Together’ concert is scheduled for September 19 in Kelowna to assist those affected. Simultaneously, the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association has launched the ‘Our Doors Are Open’ campaign to combat misinformation and reassure travelers that the region is safe for tourism.

As the region concludes its fourth consecutive year of drought, the Okanagan Valley watershed faces a significant water deficit. Melissa Tesche, executive director of the Okanagan Basin Water Board (OBWB), reported that water levels in lakes, reservoirs, and groundwater systems are substantially lower than normal. Notably, Kalamalka Lake reached ‘dead pool levels’ this summer, preventing water from flowing over the control structure into Vernon Creek. Stakeholders are now preparing for the possibility of a fifth consecutive drought year in 2027.
