Okinawa gubernatorial election announced with record six candidates

The Okinawa gubernatorial election has officially been announced, with a record six candidates filing to run. The election is scheduled for September 13, 2026.

The race is expected to be a primary contest between incumbent Denny Tamaki, seeking a third term, and newcomer Genta Koja. The central point of contention is the relocation of the Futenma Air Base to Henoko in Nago City. Tamaki has consistently opposed the relocation, while Koja, who has received recommendations from six political parties including the LDP, supports the move and emphasizes economic promotion.

Other candidates include Shun Kanashima, Masahiro Sueyoshi, Takashi Higa, and Chosuke Yara. Beyond the base issue, the campaign is expected to address economic policies regarding inflation and income, child poverty, and welfare services.
