Okinawa gubernatorial election: Genta Koja wins decisive victory

Genta Koja has secured a decisive victory in the Okinawa gubernatorial election, defeating incumbent Denny Tamaki by over 147,000 votes. Koja received 423,124 votes, representing 59.42% of the total, marking a change in prefectural administration for the first time in 12 years.

Following the election, discussions have emerged regarding the influence of social media. While Tamaki highlighted the issue of disinformation and slander on SNS platforms, critics argue that the significant margin of defeat suggests a broader rejection of his eight-year administration rather than just digital misinformation. Concerns were also raised regarding a deleted post from Tamaki’s official X account that suggested a ‘backroom deal’ involving the LDP.

In preparation for taking office on the 30th, Koja has finalized plans for his vice-governor appointments. He intends to appoint Masatoshi Onaga, a former LDP prefectural chapter chairman and advisor to Koja’s campaign, alongside Tsugiyoshi Miyagi, the current vice governor under the Tamaki administration. This dual appointment aims to combine political experience with administrative continuity to ensure a smooth transition for the new government.
