Oleksandra Matviichuk alleges Russian medics are torturing Ukrainian detainees
Oleksandra Matviichuk, leader of the Center for Civil Liberties and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, has called for urgent international intervention following allegations that Russian medical personnel are participating in the systemic torture of Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war.
A report titled ‘Anatomy of Torture’ details severe abuses, including the denial of essential medical treatment, the use of tasers on detainees, and the use of surgical instruments to carve pro-Russian slogans into the skin of prisoners. Matviichuk described instances where medics allegedly provided injections solely to restore consciousness so that torture could continue.
The Center for Civil Liberties has submitted requests to the International Criminal Court to investigate these alleged crimes against humanity. Additionally, the organization and other NGOs have appealed to the World Health Organization to ensure oversight and uphold international medical ethics. Matviichuk has also emphasized the need for the International Committee of the Red Cross to gain immediate access to all detained individuals to ensure humanitarian standards are met.
