Ukraine-Russia prisoner torture allegations
Overview
Allegations of prisoner torture have emerged from both sides of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Oleksandra Matviichuk, leader of the Center for Civil Liberties, reported that Russian medical personnel are allegedly participating in the systemic torture of Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war. The report, titled ‘Anatomy of Torture’, describes the use of tasers, the denial of medical care, and the use of surgical instruments to carve pro-Russian slogans into skin. Matviichuk has requested that the International Criminal Court investigate these actions as crimes against humanity.
In response, Rodion Miroshnik, Special Envoy for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, called for a United Nations investigation into the treatment of Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine. Miroshnik alleged that released prisoners described being subjected to “medieval” torture, including branding with hot irons and the use of torture racks. He further claimed that prisoners were held in “secret prisons” near the front lines and deprived of basic necessities.
