Oleshky civilians evacuated from Russian-occupied Ukraine
Hundreds of civilians have been evacuated from the frontline Ukrainian city of Oleshky, which has been under Russian occupation for more than four years. The evacuation, supported by a truce involving the Pope and a first lady, saw evacuees travel via a 24-hour journey through Russia and Belarus to return to Ukrainian territory.
Residents described the occupied zone as a kill zone, noting that conditions worsened this year due to increased Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian forces in the area. Civilians reported facing starvation, constant bombardment, and the necessity of searching for food in mined fields. Some residents attempted to travel to nearby Radensk for supplies but were reportedly killed by drone strikes on their vehicles.
