Humanitarian crisis in occupied Oleški

Overview

The town of Oleški in Ukraine’s Kherson Oblast is experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis under Russian occupation. The population has decreased from a pre-war level of approximately 24,000 to between 2,000 and 4,000 residents, including roughly 50 children.

Residents face extreme shortages of essential food items such as meat, flour, oil, butter, and bread, with no successful food deliveries reported since May 26. The local healthcare system has largely collapsed; the town hospital lacks electricity, running water, and basic medical supplies, leaving doctors unable to provide care beyond stopping bleeding.

Evacuation and aid efforts are severely restricted. Russian forces have reportedly mined the town and its access roads, and attempts to deliver aid have faced drone attacks. While humanitarian corridors have been sought, Russian forces have refused ceasefires and have been accused of holding hundreds of civilians hostage and forcibly returning those attempting to flee.
