Oleshky humanitarian crisis: Ukraine calls for urgent evacuation

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has warned that the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in the Kherson region has become a ‘death trap’ for its remaining residents. Approximately 1,700 people, including dozens of children, are trapped in the city facing acute starvation, a lack of electricity, running water, and heating.

Sybiha reported that the local hospital has run out of medicine and that Russian forces are preventing residents from burying the deceased, leaving bodies in streets and homes. Families are reportedly surviving on garden vegetables, canned goods, and snails. The primary overland escape routes are heavily mined and subject to continuous drone surveillance, making evacuation attempts extremely dangerous.

Ukraine has appealed to the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to secure safe evacuation corridors and immediate humanitarian access. While the Kremlin acknowledged supply shortages in September, Ukrainian officials state that recent drone-delivered aid has been insufficient to address the deepening crisis.
