Olinia electric mini-autos to replace mototaxis in Estado de México

The first mass production of Olinia, a Mexican-developed electric mini-auto, is expected to begin in mid-2027. The State of Mexico (Edomex) government plans to use these vehicles to gradually replace mototaxis, particularly the “calandria” models, which are considered unsafe.

Juan Hugo de la Rosa García, the Secretary of Mobility for the state, stated that discussions are underway with the manufacturer to establish financing mechanisms. This is intended to help operators, many of whom have limited savings, afford the transition to safer vehicles.

Before implementation, the state is conducting a census of mototaxis to create a precise diagnostic of the sector. The registration is currently approximately 50% complete. Estimates suggest there may be over 300,000 mototaxis operating in the state, with high concentrations in eastern municipalities such as Chimalhuacán and Chicoloapan.
