Mexico unveils Olinia Carga electric mini-vehicle for small businesses
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has introduced Olinia Carga, a compact electric mini-vehicle designed to promote electromobility for small businesses and workers. The vehicle is engineered to carry up to 650 kg of cargo with an autonomy of over 120 km. It features a low trunk area for tools and can accommodate two passengers. The unit is designed to be charged using standard electrical outlets.
The project, developed with engineering from institutions such as UNAM and IPN, aims to create a domestic industrial chain. A public tender to select industrial and commercial partners will be published in late September 2026, with registration in October and the closing of the investment round in December. The goal is to begin commercial sales by the end of 2027, with an estimated price of approximately 150,000 pesos.
Nacional Financiera (Nafin) will support the initiative by coordinating with the Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation to facilitate financing for micro and small entrepreneurs. The Olinia project also includes other models, such as Olinia 1 for passengers and Olinia Van for protected cargo, all sharing a common architecture.
