Olive oil faces increased fraud scrutiny and new dermatological research

Authorities in Greece and Europe are intensifying inspections to protect Kalamata extra virgin olive oil, a key economic pillar of the Messenia region. Due to high international prices, the product has become a target for fraud, including the mixing of high-quality oil with refined seed oils or lower-quality industrial oils. To combat this, the Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) and the European Food Safety Authority are implementing stricter laboratory protocols. Advanced techniques, such as high-sensitivity gas chromatography, are being used to detect deviations in fatty acid profiles, sterols, and waxes.

Separately, scientific research is highlighting the dermatological benefits of extra virgin olive oil. A clinical study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine investigated its impact on the skin barrier. The study, involving 54 healthy adults, found that applying extra virgin olive oil increased stratum corneum hydration and helped reduce skin redness and temperature, performing similarly to petroleum jelly in maintaining the skin's protective barrier.
