Olive ridley sea turtles nest on California coast for the first time

Olive ridley sea turtles, a species typically found in tropical waters, have been documented nesting on the California coast for the first time in recorded history. Two separate females were observed laying eggs in Orange County: one near the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge and another near the Huntington Beach Pier.

Experts initially thought the sightings involved a single turtle, but analysis of shell patterns and body shapes confirmed they were two different individuals. This event marks the first documented natural nesting of these turtles on the U.S. West Coast.

Scientists are investigating whether this northward migration is a temporary anomaly or a long-term range expansion driven by climate change and warming ocean temperatures, potentially influenced by the El Niño weather pattern. Local experts noted that similar, though unconfirmed, egg discoveries occurred in the region as far back as 2020.
