Italy faces regional healthcare strain and rising utility costs
Italy is facing various regional healthcare and economic challenges. In Salerno, the Oliveto Citra emergency room is at risk of collapse due to an influx of patients following the suspension of admissions at the Battipaglia hospital. The FP CGIL union has called for urgent recruitment of doctors and radiologists to address staff shortages and the lack of night-time radiology services.
In Lombardy, new healthcare structures, including community hospitals and renovated emergency rooms in Treviglio and Ponte San Pietro, are being inaugurated as part of regional reforms, despite local political criticism regarding governance. Meanwhile, in Tuscany, 45 civil service volunteers have begun supporting hospital reception and digital assistance services in areas like Cecina and Piombino.
Other regional issues include a shortage of general practitioners in the Sette Laghi district, particularly in Azzate and Tradate, where thousands of citizens lack assigned doctors. In Molise, a new 116117 non-urgent medical assistance number has been activated in Isernia to reduce pressure on emergency services. Additionally, in Veneto, rising gas prices are threatening approximately 220,000 vulnerable families with increased utility costs.
