Olivia Rodrigo releases political single ahead of all-female festival

Olivia Rodrigo has released a new political single titled “Serena Joy” on streaming platforms. The track, inspired by the character of the same name from Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale,” explores themes of complicity and the dangers of supporting oppressive systems. The song was originally recorded during sessions for her third studio album, “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love,” but was omitted because its political tone did not fit the album's romantic narrative.

The release follows a highly limited physical debut of 500 CDs at Analog Music Shop in Tustin, California. A portion of the net proceeds from the song will be donated to the Daisy Chain Fields Fund, which supports organizations such as Baby2Baby, Black Mamas Matter Alliance, and the Center for Reproductive Rights.

This musical release serves as a precursor to Rodrigo’s all-female music festival, Daisy Chain Fields, scheduled for August 29 at Great Park in Irvine, California. The sold-out event features a lineup of female artists including Chappell Roan, Mitski, Doechii, Bikini Kill, and Stevie Nicks, with proceeds also benefiting women and girls' advocacy groups.
