Olmecas de Tabasco win South Zone Championship after defeating Pericos de Puebla
The Olmecas de Tabasco have secured the South Zone Championship of the Mexican Baseball League, earning a spot in the Serie del Rey for the first time since 1993. They clinched the title by defeating the Pericos de Puebla 10-8 in the fifth game of the championship series at Estadio Hermanos Serdán.
Despite trailing 4-1 early in the game following home runs by Puebla’s Henry Ramos and Michael de la Cruz, Tabasco staged a decisive eight-run rally in the seventh inning. The comeback was fueled by an RBI double from Óscar González and two runs from Calvin Estrada, capitalizing on Puebla’s pitching struggles and defensive errors.
The victory was marked by significant on-field tension. Multiple altercations occurred after players were hit by pitches, including incidents involving Clayton Andrews hitting Herlis Rodríguez, José Martínez hitting Phillip Ervin, and Francis Peguero hitting Lorenzo Cedrola. These confrontations led to bench-clearing brawls and may result in up to 20 disciplinary penalties for the players involved.
