Oluremi Tinubu launches empowerment and food bank programmes in South-East Nigeria

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, conducted a series of official visits to the South-East region, specifically Imo and Anambra states, to launch social welfare and economic empowerment initiatives. In Imo State, she joined UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed to launch a nationwide programme aimed at helping vulnerable women build sustainable livelihoods. During this visit, Tinubu also appealed for support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election, stating her desire to build a better country for her old age. The empowerment programme in Imo included the distribution of business equipment and N100,000 cash support to beneficiaries.

In Anambra State, the First Lady launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-East zone to assist widows, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. She also commissioned a TETFund-sponsored ICT Experience Centre at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, to enhance digital skills for local youth. During her visit to Anambra, she was conferred with the ‘Ugo Eze Anambra’ chieftaincy title by the state’s traditional rulers. Additionally, she participated in a statewide empowerment programme in Anambra led by First Lady Nonye Soludo, which provides vocational tools and grants to 5,000 residents.

Separately, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed visited the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute (OOLI) in Ogun State. She met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo to discuss shared priorities including peacebuilding, sustainable development, and strengthening governance institutions across Africa.
