Nigeria National Community Food Bank Programme expansion
Overview
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is expanding the National Community Food Bank Programme across various geopolitical zones to combat food insecurity and malnutrition. The initiative specifically targets vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under six.
Following the South-West zonal launch in Ogun State, the programme moved into the South-South and South-East regions. In the South-South zone, the programme was launched in Calabar, Cross River State, enrolling 1,179 beneficiaries and disbursing 2,089 food packages. Supporters noted the initiative is expected to boost local economies by sourcing crops and livestock from local farmers.
As the expansion reaches the South-East, Senator Tinubu’s visit to the region has included additional empowerment initiatives in Imo State. There, she participated in a program distributing business equipment—including generators, industrial grinding machines, and ovens—to women. This effort, part of a nationwide initiative to benefit 18,500 women, was supplemented by Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma, who provided items for an additional 2,000 beneficiaries. In response, the First Lady announced a N100,000 cash grant for each recipient. During this visit, she was also conferred with the traditional chieftaincy title ‘Oso Di Eme I’ of Imo State.
In Anambra State, the First Lady launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-East zone to assist widows, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. She also commissioned a TETFund-sponsored ICT Experience Centre at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, to enhance digital skills for local youth. During her visit to Anambra, she was conferred with the ‘Ugo Eze Anambra’ chieftaincy title. Additionally, she participated in a statewide empowerment programme led by Anambra First Lady Nonye Soludo, which provides vocational tools and grants to 5,000 residents.
