Olusegun Runsewe warns of AI misuse and social media manipulation
Olusegun Runsewe, the former Director-General of Nigeria’s National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), has issued a warning regarding the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on social media. While noting that AI can enhance research and communication when used responsibly, Runsewe cautioned that its unguided use poses significant threats to societal stability.
Runsewe highlighted that AI-generated fake images and cloned voices can be exploited to spread misinformation, fuel inter-religious and inter-ethnic strife, and destabilize government institutions. He specifically noted the risk of AI-generated content being used to manipulate the political landscape as Nigeria approaches its 2027 general elections.
Additionally, Runsewe expressed concern over the impact of AI on higher education, stating that excessive student reliance on the technology has led to increased plagiarism and a lack of originality among graduates. He urged the public to fact-check information before sharing it to prevent social tension.
