Nigeria AI risks and 2027 election concerns

Overview

Concerns have been raised regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on Nigeria’s political and social stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Senator Victor Umeh warned that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s potential use of AI could facilitate “sophisticated electoral manipulation” through the creation of fabricated content designed to deceive voters. Umeh also noted that lingering technical issues from the 2023 presidential election collation continue to fuel public anxiety.

Following these concerns, Olusegun Runsewe, former Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, cautioned that AI-generated fake images and cloned voices could be exploited to spread misinformation. Runsewe stated that such technology could fuel inter-religious and inter-ethnic strife, destabilize government institutions, and manipulate the political landscape. He also highlighted secondary risks, including increased plagiarism in higher education.
