Olympiacos stadium upgrade cleared by Piraeus council

The Piraeus Municipal Council voted unanimously to approve the plan for a major upgrade of Olympiacos’ home ground, the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium. The proposal calls for increasing the permitted height and expanding the capacity to over 50,000 seats, along with modern technological and environmental features to meet European standards and host international sporting and cultural events.

The redevelopment is estimated at €250 million and will be financed entirely by the club’s private sporting entity (PAE Olympiacos), meaning no burden on the Greek state budget. Implementation will require a new special urban planning scheme and related legislative regulation, which the council will forward to the Ministry of Environment and Energy. Mayor Giannis Mora l was present at the session and highlighted the project as the largest private investment in the city’s history.

Technical consultants presented detailed designs, emphasizing improved spectator circulation, flexible multipurpose spaces, and sustainability measures. The club’s president, Vangelis Marinakis, is expected to formally launch the project in an upcoming event.
