Omega-3 and Aspirin Combo Matches Antibiotics for Severe Periodontitis
A multinational study involving researchers from Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital, Guarulhos University, the University of Taubaté, the Ribeirão Preto School of Dentistry at USP in Brazil, and Harvard University in the United States found that a combination of omega‑3 fatty acids and low‑dose acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) produced clinical outcomes comparable to standard antibiotic therapy for severe periodontitis. The trial, published in May in the Journal of Periodontology, followed 109 patients with advanced disease for one year and assigned them to four groups: placebo, a two‑week course of metronidazole and amoxicillin, a six‑month regimen of omega‑3 plus daily aspirin, and a combined protocol of antibiotics followed by omega‑3/ASA. By the end of the study, the omega‑3/ASA regimen achieved similar improvements to the antibiotic group, suggesting a viable alternative that could reduce antibiotic use amid rising concerns over bacterial resistance. "Patients with severe disease have very deep pockets, which act as reservoirs for bacteria associated with the disease," said lead author dental surgeon Nídia Cristina Castro dos Santos.
The findings highlight a potential shift in periodontal therapy, offering clinicians a non‑antibiotic option that may help curb the spread of resistant microbes while effectively managing a chronic inflammatory condition that can lead to tooth loss if untreated.
