Alternative treatments for periodontitis and gum disease

Clinical research has identified potential non-antibiotic alternatives for managing periodontitis and gum inflammation. A multinational study involving institutions in Brazil and the United States, including Harvard University, demonstrated that a six-month regimen of omega-3 fatty acids combined with low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) produced clinical outcomes comparable to a two-week course of metronidazole and amoxicillin for patients with severe periodontitis.

Lead author Nídia Cristina Castro dos Santos noted that patients with severe disease possess “very deep pockets, which act as reservoirs for bacteria associated with the disease.” The findings suggest that managing the body’s inflammatory response may offer a viable way to treat chronic periodontal conditions while reducing reliance on traditional antibiotics and addressing concerns regarding bacterial resistance.

In a related development, a study in Romania involving 175 healthy adults found that a chamomile herbal rinse was statistically as effective as the prescription-strength antiseptic chlorhexidine in reducing gingival inflammation over a twelve-week period.
