Wildfires in Croatia cause fatalities and massive property damage
Major wildfires have caused significant destruction and loss of life across the Adriatic region. In the Omiš area, the death toll has risen to three people, including a 58-year-old woman who succumbed to her injuries at KBC Split. The fire destroyed approximately 1,000 hectares of land, 58 houses, 36 vehicles, and 25 vessels, with material damages estimated at 110 million euros. More than 40 people required medical assistance, with several remaining in intensive care.
On the island of Brač, a large wildfire between Ložišća and Dračevice burned roughly 1,200 hectares of pine forest and maquis. Driven by strong winds, the fire threatened settlements like Ložišća and Bobovišća, prompting emergency preparations for maritime evacuations. While firefighters successfully defended all residential buildings, the fire caused power outages and road closures. Aerial support from Canadair aircraft was deployed to combat the flames.
Additionally, heavy rainfall caused flooding in Split, affecting streets, garages, and local infrastructure, while separate wildfires were reported in Montenegro near Nikšić and Šavnik.
